Topsham and surrounds is a great area for cycling. We’re not only located on NCN Route 2, Topsham is also a great centre from which to head out for cycles on quiet roads across the East Devon countryside. There are mountain biking trails on nearby Woodbury Common and across the river in Haldon Forest, while road cycling is safe and pleasant on a network of country roads and lanes literally on our doorstep. If you’d like suggestions for quiet routes, simply ask us.

Since 2005, Exeter has been one of six nationally designated “Cycling Demonstration Towns”. Working in conjunction with Exeter City Council, Devon County Council, Cycling England, and Sustrans, its ‘Freedom of Your City’ is a campaign that aims to double the number of cycling journeys in and around Exeter by 2011. This will be achieved not only by improving cycle routes in Exeter and surrounds, but also by offering free cycle training for both children and adults.

At Route 2, we offer regular cycle maintenance courses and we also are looking to put in place a ‘cycling buddy’ group whereby those who are less confident on a bicycle may ride with others to gain or regain confidence on two wheels.

We may still have a long way to go before England is truly ‘cycle friendly’ but at least here in Topsham, Exeter and across Devon, we are trying to do our bit.

Here are some useful cycling resources:

Exe Estuary Trail
CTC Devon – cyclists touring club Devon
Sustrans cycle routes in Devon
Haldon Forestry Park Adventure Cycling Trail
