We love cycling!
Topsham is a great centre from which to explore the beautiful countryside
of the Exe estuary. Route 2 is so named because it is located directly
on the National Cycle Network (NCN) Route 2 that is being developed by Devon
County Council, Exeter City Council and Sustrans. Once completed, our stretch
of Route 2 will form part of a major thoroughfare for cyclists, running
from Kent all the way to Cornwall!
The section that we are located on is also known as the Exe Estuary
Trail. The cycle route is currently in place from Exeter to Topsham
and from Lympstone to Exmouth, from where a longer route extends
to Budleigh Salterton using a disused railway line, and onward to
Sidmouth on quiet roads. Across the river, there is a traffic-free
route from Exeter along Britain’s first ship canal to Turf Locks
and Powderham.
Route 2 welcome cyclists!
If you are cycling on the Exe Estuary Trail, please drop in for refreshment
or for a break. If you are looking to set out along the trail,
you can park on Topsham Quay, directly opposite Route 2, and start
and finish from here.
We have a good selection of bicycles available for hire, including
tandems, tricycles, children’s bikes, and a variety of adult bikes.
We can even put together a picnic hamper for you to enjoy along the
way!
Repairs, maintenance, workshops
Route 2 can offer simple emergency bicycle repairs, as well as routine
maintenance. Marc Sanders, Route 2 Manager, is himself a keen
cyclist and is currently undertaking his Cytech bicycle maintenance
course, a national, industry recognised qualification. We also
offer routine maintenance workshops, so there’s no excuse not to
get your hands dirty!
In the future, we are looking to develop a Route
2 cycling club that will cater for all abilities. Please register
your interest with us.
